Dental Sedation – Dentistry in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Mandeville, and Surrounding Areas
Many people feel anxious about visiting the dentist because of the pain and discomfort they associate with dental treatment. If you are one of these people, sedation dentistry, or dental sedation, may be an excellent option. Bluebonnet Dental Care provides advanced sedation dentistry to patients from Lafayette, Mandeville, Baton Rouge, and surrounding areas. Sedation dentistry helps minimize or eliminate dental anxiety, allowing patients to relax in the dentist’s chair and obtain the treatment they need.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the administration of a dental sedative just before, or at the beginning of, a dental procedure. It causes the patient to experience a sense of deep relaxation, and many patients hardly notice when the dentist administers the anesthetic at the start of the appointment. Sedation dentistry can be used in a number of treatments, including restorative dentistry, placement of dental crowns, dental bridges, dental implants, inlays and onlays, full mouth reconstructions, root canal therapy, periodontal treatment, and tooth extractions.

Dental Sedation Options
Bluebonnet Dental Care provides two dental sedation options: nitrous oxide and oral sedation (or “sleep dentistry”). Our dentists are dedicated to helping each patient choose the option that is best for him or her.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide sedation, or “laughing gas,” is administered by inhalation at the beginning of the patient’s dental appointment. It takes effect immediately, and the dentist can precisely adjust the degree of sedation throughout treatment. Nitrous oxide puts the patient into a deeply relaxed state, but he or she remains conscious and coherent enough to respond to simple commands from the dentist. Finally, the gas does not typically cause extreme grogginess once it wears off (usually approximately two or three hours after the procedure).
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation can be an excellent option for patients with more pronounced dental phobia. The sedative is administered in pill form approximately one hour before the patient’s scheduled appointment. The pill induces an extremely tranquil state by the time the patient arrives at our office. Some patients are unaware they are even at the dentist, and many sleep through the entire appointment with little or no memory of the procedure. Oral sedation can cause more grogginess than nitrous sedation, and patients should have a responsible adult drive them to and from their appointment.
